Mornin' all,

Long time, no... anything.

Anyhoo, this post is merely a plug for my first music video for a proper band. Nip over to www.gwailofilms.com and download the vid (3.5mb & you need Windows Media Player 9 (may work on v8)).

Any and all feedback (good and bad, particularly bad; nobody ever improved through constant praise) welcomed.

Nice editing, and what you managed to film on an obviously strained budget is pretty good.
Didnt like the song, or the gormless lead singer, so didnt sit through it all.

Id say it failed though as a music video because, although well made, it doesnt flatter the performers at all, and the subject is so mundane.... (eating olives, horse racing, talking on the phone) I couldnt face watching it all the way through.

There was some kind of story yes? About winning on the horses?

Hope thats useful.

Erm... thanks?

Anyone managed to sit through the full Lord of the Rings-esque 2mins 40secs?

alright, gritted my teeth and watched it all the way through this time.

So comments...
Stick by what I said above, only I thought it was pretty good, once it all panned out.
perhaps a little long winded.

I didnt think the edits to the rhythm worked very well - too fast, too distracting, maybe Im not MTV enough. Although it is well put together.

The flashback with the fat guy is nicely done really, but the lead singer is still gormless on second veiwing.

The stuff on the phone seemed irrelivant (and distracting) because I couldnt see what it had to do with the story. (??)

Otherwise pretty neat, if a bit long for a web movie.

Cheers

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Interesting. This is what a lot of people have liked. I come from a world of cutting trailers (like this one), so this kind of thing is the norm for me.

The flashback with the fat guy is nicely done really,
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Thank you.

but the lead singer is still gormless on second veiwing.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Poor Gary. Yes, he tends to be in a world of his very own most of the time.

The stuff on the phone seemed irrelivant (and distracting) because I couldnt see what it had to do with the story. (??)
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Heh... erm... very little to tell the truth. When we arerived at the racecourse, we noticed they had an immaculate old red phonebox, so we decided to use it. We just thought it'd be kinda fun to have Gary singing the song down the phone. It was rationalised later that, given the lines used in the final cut, he could have been singing to the girl that's just left him.

Otherwise pretty neat, if a bit long for a web movie.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Really? The song's only 2:30 and the video's only 10 seconds longer than that. Most singles run between three and four minutes. I'll wager that just about everyone who posts here has got a longer film/clip/music vid/whatever hosted in their personal webspace.

Thank you for your perseverance and thank you for your comments.

Any more for any more?

I thought it was okay, not bad at all. I suppose the biggest complement I can pay it is that it was indistinguishable from much of what you see on mtv, the box, etc, etc.

For me the weakest part was the song, particularly the quality of the recording (although that might be due to being compressed for the web). It's still certainly not something I'd pay to listen to.

the stuff on the phone was fine with me, as were the fast cuts. (god forbid I'm the MTV generation!). With due respect to eidde nobody said good pop video's need to make sense. If you don't believe me check this out!

I would agree with the lead singer being gormless though, he seemed to be playing up to a slight likeness to Robbie Williams. Unless this band is paying you or friends of yours I'd try and find someone better to make videos for.

And WMV files will play with the latest version of winamp.

Well, I have really limited access at work, where I use the internet, and couldn't view the WMV files. HOWEVER, I checked out the wrestleing traileryou have done, and I'm quite impressed! It's clearly not WWE wretling, but it actually looked better cut than some stuff I've seen!

I don't have sound either, so I had to imagine what track was playing, which didn't help...

Believe it or not, after hearing loads of "It's great!" from music/non-film types, it's actually refreshing to hear some harsh criticism from fellow camera-wielders.

For me the weakest part was the song, particularly the quality of the recording (although that might be due to being compressed for the web). It's still certainly not something I'd pay to listen to.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yeah, the sound quality's due to compressing for t'web. When it came to output time, I had to decide between sacrificing picture quality or sound quality and, as it was going on my site, I chose to knobble the sound. The one I do for the band's site will be the other way around. The track (and the whole album) is actually very well produced.

Unless this band is paying you or friends of yours I'd try and find someone better to make videos for.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I quite like the music and I'm glad I picked this band over "generic metal band #156784" to do my first promo for. But I digress, I'm not here to defend the music, I'm here to answer questions/field insults over the video and "someone better" is entirely subjective.

And, yes, I made a wee bit of "ker-ching" from this vid.

It's clearly not WWE wretling, but it actually looked better cut than some stuff I've seen!
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Thank you. The idea was that they wanted a hype video in the style of the WWF/E ones and, on the strength of an ad I'd cut for one of their video releases, they asked me to do it. That little trailer got a (comparitively) huge response with over 2000 people downloading it in its first week online. It clearly impressed people in the right places because, as of May, I'll be their head of TV & video production.

I don't have sound either, so I had to imagine what track was playing, which didn't help...
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The track is called "Point of no Return" by Citizen Smith and is available from here. Not that that'll help without a soundcard...

It's certainly better than the average popmusic video on mtv nowadays.

It didn't make any sense. But it didnt have to.
The editing was good. But I think you should give the viewer a rest in a few places. It's pretty much constant boom boom boom cut cut cut all the video long. That wasn't correct grammar now was it?

But a lot of the stuff didnt make sence because of the superfast intercutting. (inter being the important word here)

But otherwise, good job
